Well, actually “kraj” means just a region, “okraj” means an edge. And since at least geographically (although hardly politically) Europe goes up to Ural, yes, Slovakia is roughly somewhere in the center.

I don’t actually see connection between “okraj” and “krajat”, but I don’t really know etymology that much. Sorry about confusing you about “kraj”, your comic is OK with that word.
